Presentation Volunteers Summer Program
"Mentoring New Americans in English"
June 30th ~ July 1-2 ~ July 9-10

Women from other cultures and languages looking to improve their English skills and increase their work opportunities came to Presentation Center each Tuesday evening for six weeks this summer. Young women and Presentation Sister volunteers mentored the women one-on-one in speaking, reading, or writing the English language, or working on citizenship, driver's licenses, or job specific preparation while others cared for their children. Patterned after the "Giving + Learning" program sponsored by Riverview Place that involves seniors as mentors, the Presentation Volunteer Program is assisted in coordination by Michele McRae director of that program.

This is our sixth year for this program and it continues to grow! Introductions at sessions reveal such countries of origin as Sudan, Ethiopia, Croatia, Bosnia, and Egypt.  While the volunteers are from North Dakota and Minnesota juggling their work or school schedules to be available as many Tuesday evenings as possible. It is a real exchange of cultures and friendship.  In addition to its educational focus, it allows for the participants to meet other women outside their families and cultural circles and, particularly for those not working outside the home, it gives them the opportunity for an evening out.
