Peace and Justice

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

In Collaboration with the International Presentation Association, the Presentation Peace and Justice Center in Fargo works to promote systemic change and a sustainable society through direct aid, education and social activism.

“PEACE IS BORN OF JUSTICE”
(Pope John Paul II)

Lobbying For Justice

Invited by "Catholics United", Sr. Maris Stella Korb joined other faith groups to lobby in Washington for Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) which, if passed, will allow workers to unionize without management intimidation or interference.

Gathered in Senator Dorgan's office are Dorgan's Legislative Assistant, Sr. Maris Stella and UCC Paster Ron Hildahl from Minot.

This group of North and South Dakotans were in Sioux Falls in April to support and advance the creation of a Dept. of Peace within the U.S. government.

Bishop Tom Gumbleton, principal speaker at the gathering, shared faith, history and incentive to back such a Department. Fargo Presentation Sisters had formally confirmed their support of the Department on January 6, 2009.

back row: Kulath, BiJou, Anil, and Sr. Marcelline. front row: Srs. Rosaria, Del Rey, Olivia and Justina

At Olivet Lutheran Church people of various faiths gathered to pray for and with the trafficked Indian Workers, that their Hearing in Immigration Court in Bloomington, MN, on May 7 would end favorably.

It did! The men were granted "continuing presence" in the country at least until Feb, 2010. Until they receive "T-Visas," however, they may not work for pay! Meanwhile the U.S. Company that trafficked them, Signal International, is presumably under investigation.

Banners Across America
Along with 150 religious groups across the U.S., Presentation Sisters are displaying the banner on their property to draw attention to a policy that is both inhuman and un-American.

Below is a "Statement of Conscience Against Torture" which the Sisters fully support.  It was formulated by the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, which initiated the "Banners Across America" project for particularly the months of June and November.

A  Statement of Conscience Against Torture

"Torture violates the basic dignity of the human
person that all religions, in their highest ideals,
hold dear.  It degrades everyone involved -- policy-makers,
perpetrators and victims.  It contradicts our nation's most
cherished ideals.  Any policies that permit torture and inhumane
treatment are shocking and morally intolerable."
